Bakatnya itu membuat ia ditempatkan di akademi brutal Hitler Youth, lalu ia mendapat sebuah tugas khusus untuk melacak para pemberontak. Kisah keduanya dimulai pada tahun 1944 ketika Werner dikirim oleh pasukan Jerman ke Saint-Malo. Pertemuan ini memunculkan ikatan yang kuat dan membuat Werner terdorong untuk menyelamatkan nyawa Marie-Laure dari kejaran tentara Nazi.
